BikeSummer! 2008
An evolution of bike activism and bike culture
Planet Earth, 2008-????

If your group would like to host a BikeSummer! 2008 celebration, send an e-mail to bike(at)bikesummer.org, and we will link to your local BikeSummer! web site. We hope to see multiple BikeSummer! 2008 gatherings, so please join the velorution soon. Let's roll!

What:

BikeSummer! 2008 is a celebration of love for bicycles and community beginning Summer Solstice 2008. Bike culture, rides, speakers, street theatre, art, classes, workshops, music, films, critical masses, community building, and more. Make plans now to join us in the velorution as bicyclists and peace activists from around the world transform their own communities with the next seven generations in mind.

Fun Stuff:

Chief Wiggum's Road Rage Awareness Class - Popular Simpsons police chief attempts to calm hot-tempered drivers. Hat tip to Matt Groening. [Requires Divx Player]

An Honest Chevron Commercial - featuring one of those talking cars. [Requires Divx Player]

Interview with the Dinosaur - an extinct species explains why cars suck (no apologies to blood-sucking vampire Tom Cruise). [Requires Divx Player]

The Mercury Mistress - SNL spoof commercial. [Requires Divx Player]

Try The Patch - .wmv video on transportation pollution and solutions. More free, fun, green videos here.

Enjoy this video clip of the San Francisco Bicycle Ballet in action.

Shall we play a game? Try out The Where's Waldo of BushCo. about how the RAND Corp. has abused Critical Mass to make it into a weapon for its oil wars.

BikeSummer! 2008 Host Cities:

This year, instead of bikesummer.org hosting every local BikeSummer! celebration, it's time to roll your own. E-mail the 2008 ad-hoc committee at bike(at)bikesummer.org once you've launched your local BikeSummer! plans, and we'll link to them here at bikesummer.org. It can be a single day, a weekend, an entire week, or longer: your local BikeSummer! plans are up to the people who make them. One host city has already been confirmed, to be announced shortly. The web site will be updated frequently, so stay tuned for more...

Why:

Bicycling and community building are issues that affect everyone. Unfortunately our political leaders have not done enough to improve our current situation. Therefore we are spreading the word that bicycles are part of the peaceful solution to the planet's problems, for a bit of cross pollination, inspiration, and motivation. So join us in making the BikeSummer! dream a reality.

What Can I Do To Help?

Thanks so far for all the offers of support, we do appreciate it. BikeSummer! has never been a for-profit venue: whenever possible, all events have been free. Support the velorution by spreading the word in your community. Consider a donation to Bikes Not Bombs if you support peace.

When the BikeSummer! 2008 ad-hoc committee says GRRRRRR...!
We let that growl remind us: Go Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Restore, Rethink.
Author James Howard Kunstler offers us these potential solutions to our global mess.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.
RAND Corp. Tip Line:

The insidious RAND Corporation studied, infiltrated, and experimented on Critical Mass and Bay Area activists in the late 1990's, subverting grassroots organizations, and twisting humanitarian and environmental efforts for abuse by the U.S military. Share you tips and insights on this abuse of freedom with us at Can-RAND (at) bikesummer.org. All submissions will remain anonymous. Thank you.
