BikeSummer Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Bike Summer?

BikeSummer is a month long bicycle extravaganza that includes the full spectrum of bicycle events. Everything from races and fun rides to parties, films, and art shows. Each year BikeSummer is in a different city and this year Los Angeles is hosting it from June 3rd to July 4th.

2. Who can put on BikeSummer events?

Anyone can host an event! The organizing committee for BikeSummer merely provides the framework; we are relying on individuals, organizations, and others to create the rad events. If you are on a racing team you could put on some beginner rides for those bicyclists interested in pursuing racing. Have you done a bike tour? You could host a workshop on what to pack and how to train and follow it up with a small tour! Do you know how to lobby your local planners for more bike lanes and bike racks? This is an opportunity to expose more cyclists to advocacy work.

3. How can I get involved with Bike Summer?

BikeSummer is hosted by a dedicated group of individuals who have donated their time and energy for the promotion of the bicycle. We would love to have your help! Working groups for promotion, finances, media, events, and artwork already exist with others forming as time goes on. Interested in hosting an event? Let us know what you have planned and add it to our online calendar. Check www.bikesummer.org for specific information.

4. Where are these events going to be held?

The majority of events will take place in the greater LA area, with the exception of some long distance rides that will extend throughout Southern California.

5. I am new to bicycling, will there be family events?

Absolutely. There will be events for all levels of bicycling including family oriented rides and activities.

6. Why is this event in Los Angeles? Isn’t this a car city?

In its seven years BikeSummer has traveled around the country (and even to Canada!). For 2005 Los Angeles, with its thriving bicycle culture, has the opportunity to showcase its perfect cycling weather, miles of flat bike lanes and paths, its diverse cycling environments, and its wide range of cyclists. Historically people have traveled from all over the country to attend Bike Summer.

7. What types of events have happened in the past?

See http://www.bikesummer.org/2005/history for the full range of activities from the past 6 years. Riding events have included restaurant/cultural/environmental tours, pub crawls, races, and double centuries. Social events like art shows, film festivals, and swap meets are always popular. Advocacy and clinics/workshops have always been a part of BikeSummer.
