Dear Friend, BikeSummer is a month-long festival celebrating the bicycle. This all-ages, all-boroughs event is coming to New York City in 2003! Please help us make New York's BikeSummer the best ever. What is BikeSummer?BikeSummer is a framework for fun and educational events: rides, competitions, workshops, movie screenings, exhibits, historical tours, eco tours, advocacy discussions, bike art, BMX events, and more. BikeSummer was founded in San Francisco in 1999 to focus the bicycle movement and to promote bicycling and transportation concerns, and its exciting month of actions, adventures, and advocacy was a great success. Since then, the festival has traveled to Vancouver, Chicago, and Portland, OR, leaving behind expanded, energized, and more effective cycling communities. This year, between June 27 and July 26, BikeSummer makes its East Coast debut, giving locals and visitors from around the globe the chance to discover the unique (and healthy) experience of cycling in New York City. Who's putting it all together, and how?BikeSummer 2003 is being produced entirely by volunteers from a broad coalition of local cycling groups. While more than 50 arts, cultural, and environmental groups, organizations, and businesses are hosting events for BikeSummer, the BikeSummer Organizing Committee is doing all the outreach, publicity, promotion, and coordination. Our Web site, as you can see here, is loaded with information and graphics, including event listings, ways to get involved, and links to supporters. We're also producing promotional flyers, postcards, stickers, postcards, posters, and t-shirts to distribute around the city and across the country. In early June, we'll print and distribute 50,000 calendars. What will it cost?Although most events will be free of charge, and all the work is being done by volunteers, funds are needed to pay for promotional materials (printing and distribution) and administrative expenses--an estimated $17,000 for the entire month. We think this is a great deal for this incredible celebration and the lasting legacy it will leave. How can you help?
Thanks for your support in helping to build an urban culture that values the bicycle as a vehicle of liberation, sustainability and friendlier communities! Sincerely, BikeSummer 2003 Organizing Committee
