Local Mass Transit

NYC has the largest transit network in North America. Most of it is bike accessible. Only two systems require a permit: Metro North and the Long Island Railroad. Getting the permit is a piece of cake: one permit is good on both railroads, you can get them in person at their main city terminals or you can print out this online application and mail it in.

The regional railroads provide a quick, cheap way to escape the city for excellent rural rides and camping trips.

NYC Subways
Serves most of the city. No permit needed. Bikes allowed at all times, just don't get in anyone's way.
A single subway ride costs $2.00. If you put $10 or more on a fare card (we call it a "MetroCard") at one time, you get a 20% bonus. A day passes (aka "FunPass") costs $7 and is good until 1:00 am, so if you're going to take 5 or more trips, get one.
NYC Buses
Metro North Railroad
Serves points north of the city. The Port Jervis line follows NJ Transit's rules.
