Bikesummer is an annual event in which lots of crazy people gather to celebrate bike culture. Bike lovers from all over the world come to take part in events that range from art shows, bike ballet, and bike gladiators to mechanical work, demonstrations and night-time nature rides. This is the third year that it has taken place, the first BikeSummer took place in San Francisco in 1999, then in Chicago and 2000. This year, we are holding it in Vancouver during the month of August. Since a lot of people cannot escape work for too long, we are focusing most of the events in the last two weeks of the month (August 18-31). There will be things going on for the whole month, however, so come and party whenever you can.
Bikesummer is essentially a large series of bike events that are organized by individuals and certain companies. We have not yet created an official schedule, but you can see what kinds of things are going on by looking in the calendar section. This will be updated constantly as more and more people come up with ideas. We are several months away from August, but there are already a slew of events that have been planned. If you have any ideas for events, you can submit to us here and we'll add it onto the calendar. People are encouraged to submit any ideas that come up, because this is what makes up the basis of the festivities.
We strongly encourage people from out of town to come and participate. The last two Bikesummers have drawn people from all corners of North America and even many from Europe. We are making arragements to provide accomodations to anyone travelling from afar. We are hoping to find some volunteers to billet people, and will also gather information about cheap hostels and other places to stay. There will be lots of cheap bike rentals in effect, so don't worry if you can't bring your own. Check the local access section for information on places to stay, places to eat, bus schedules, and general getting around in Vancouver
WE NEED HELP! If you want to work with cool people and help organize a great festival, we really need your support. Check out the Get Involved section to see different ways in which you can help.
If you have any more questions, please send us an email at bikesummer@bikesexual.org. More information will be posted here as things become more and more concrete.
