Cruiser Ride
photos by Vince Vitale

American Cyclery's Cruiser ride was last night and I must apologize to you all for not alerting you that there was FREE BEER. Bradley carried a Thirsty Bear keg on his Long John. The importance of corking was demonstrated as he biked down a hill, the weight of the keg and gravity working together to render his brakes useless.

The fog started rolling in as soon as we started riding. We went to Sutro Heights, and despite the fog, it was really beautiful. Thanks to LX for taking his girlfriend's advice and bringing along some firewood. It was chilly and the fire was much appreciated. My jacket smelled great this morning.

We had 25 riders, about half who were Brad's friends, riding cruisers from his collection. The other half were folks that we all pretty much know, not many newcomers, but I did meet two new cyclists.

My favorite rider was one of Brad's friends visiting from Southern California. She had called the store around 5pm from her cell phone, asking how to get off the freeway. She was lost. Henry loaned her one of his cruisers for the ride. Even though I could tell she was struggling up the hills with it, I could also see how much fun she was having cruising down the hills.

After experiencing the frustration of the freeway, she got to experience a fun group ride, where everyone cooperated and made sure she didn't get lost or left behind. Not to mention just the plain joy of cruisin'. She and her husband seemed very nice and were really interested when I was telling them about "Taken For A Ride". They experience the lack of public transit in Southern California.

Looking forward to Anna's Geology Rider next week.
